During a day in Puerto Rico working in a beauty salon in the metropolitan area of the island, I was able to meet many fabulous people that I still appreciate. As time passed, they became part of my regular clients and many of them formed part of my circle of friends.

One day as usual at work I had the honor of meeting Iliana Ross. She had an artist’s air, with a lot of presence and she carried her person very elegantly. My boss at the time John Vo had recommended it to me and he had given her excellent recommendations from my work. After presenting myself and entering a consultation I was able to captivate her with the idea of doing the hair service that I had already projected as an artist and that would be the best choice to complete her image. She was very divine ¨by the way¨.

She was so curious to me, that I could not choose to ask her who was she? or what she does? she answered me: I am currently an interior decorator, but I was an actress in the leading role of the film, ¨La coquito¨. We went into conversation and I asked her a lot of questions about her career as an artist and I was totally surprised with this shared experience. After having finished her hair she was fascinated by my work.

A few hours after Iliana left the room, I looked for information about her, it turns out that in 1977 was the premiere of the film ¨La coquito¨. She was one of the first at the time of the Transition, in a “sex symbol”, which moved on the screen with applied sensuality, dancing and pretending to sing with mischievous songs of the early twentieth century, “la bélle-époque”, ” The flea “,” The shower “,” Ay ba, ay ba! “… La Coquito was nine months on the bill, was also exhibited successfully in several cinemas-theaters in New York and in virtually all Spanish America. Pedro Masó (Film Director) wanted, before meeting Ileana Martinez, that Isabel Pantoja was Coquito. Omg, I got to dance with Isabel Pantojas in 1994, lol. But it could not be Pantojas, nor could Lolita, because in this case Lola Flores did not leave her. There were scenes with nude and light clothes. Then her stage name changed to Iliana Ross. She worked with a number of artists among them Fernando Allende.

After having read information about her, I went to find the movie on youtube. The film is old but extremely interesting. They present that life brings good opportunities no matter your past or circumstances. If you like movies, I truly recommend this one.

Quickly to find so much information about who Ileana was, I had to quickly share with my co-workers and with my boss.

I am totally proud of not only by giving my services and meeting this artist, I’m also very proud of her being Puerto Rican like me and triumphing outside the island at an early age.

Well, over time she formed part of my regular clients and in additional I was collaborating with her doing her hair in a night show in Puerto Rico called: “After 11”.

I am extremely happy with my work and with the experiences that allows me to live my career. I wanted to share this story with the idea that you can know more about me and that in life there are no obstacles that can not be derived. SPANISH/ Yo le hice el cabello a la coquito, y ¿quien es la coquito?

Durante una jornada en Puerto Rico trabajando en un salon de belleza en el area metropolitana de la isla, pude conocer a mucha gente fabulosa que aún aprecio. Al pasar del tiempo formaron a ser parte de mis clientes regulares y muchas de ellas formaron a ser parte de mi círculo de amistades.

Un día como de costumbre en el trabajo tuve el honor de conocer a Iliana Ross. Ella poseía un aire de artista, con mucha presencia y cargaba su persona con mucha elegancia. Mi jefe en ese entonces John Vo me la había recomendado y él le había dado excelentes recomendaciones de mi trabajo. Luego de presentarme y entrar en una consulta pude cautivarla con la idea de realizarle el servicio de cabello que yo ya había proyectado como artista y que seria la mejor elección para completar su imagen. Ella era muy divina ¨by the way¨.

Me estuvo tan curioso ella, que no pude optar con preguntarle que ¿quien era? o ¿que hacia?, ella me contesto: Yo actualmente soy decoradora de interiores, pero fui actriz del papel protagónico de la película, ¨La coquito¨. Entramos en conversación y yo le hice un sin numero de preguntas sobre su carrera como artista y quede totalmente sorprendida con dicha experiencia compartida. Luego de haber terminado su cabello ella quedo fascinada con mi trabajo.

Unas horas después de haberse ido Iliana del salon, busque información sobre ella, resulta que en el 1977 fue el estreno de la película ¨La coquito¨. Ella era una de las primeras en tiempos de la Transición, en un “sex symbol”, que se movía en la pantalla con aplicada sensualidad, bailando y simulando cantar con picardía canciones de principios del siglo XX, “la bélle-époque”, “La pulga”, “La regadera”, “¡Ay ba, ay ba!”… La Coquito estuvo nueve meses en cartel, se exhibió también con éxito en varios cines-teatros de Nueva York y en prácticamente toda Hispanoamérica. Pedro Masó (Director de película) quiso, antes de conocer a Ileana Martinez, que Isabel Pantoja fuera la Coquito. Omg, yo llegue a bailar con Isabel Pantojas en el 1994, lol. Pero No pudo ser Pantojas, como tampoco Lolita, porque en este caso Lola Flores no la dejó. Había escenas con desnudos y ligera de ropa. Luego su nombre artístico cambio a ser Iliana Ross.

Luego de haber leído información sobre ella me fue a buscar la película en youtube. La película es antigua pero sumamente interesante. Presentan que la vida trae buenas oportunidades no importando tu pasado o las circunstancias. Si te gustan las películas te recomiendo esta.

Rápidamente al encontrarme con tanta información sobre quien era Ileana tuve que rápidamente compartir con mis compañeros de trabajo y con mí jefe.

Estoy totalmente orgullosa de no tan solo atender y conocer a esta artista, también super orgullosa por ser puertorriqueña y triunfar fuera de la isla a temprana edad.

Bueno, con el tiempo ella formo a ser parte de mis clientas regulares y en adicional estuve colaborando con su arreglo personal en un programa nocturno llamado ¨Después de las 11¨.

Estoy sumamente contenta con mi trabajo y con las experiencias que me permite vivir mi carrera. Quise compartir esta historia con la idea de que puedas saber mas de mi y que en la vida no existen obstáculos que no se puedan derivar.
